Oil Drilling Fluids

BIOVISC 30 LIQUID HEC

BIOVISC 30 is a 30% solids dispersion of hydroxy-ethyl cellulose in a non-toxic, vegetable oil based carrier fluid containing a unique suspending agent, which gives the product excellent storage stability.

BIOVISC 30 offers rapid dispersion and hydration of the HEC without the traditional problems of lumping and "fish eye" effects associated with powder HEC additions.

APPLICATION

BIOVISC 30 dispersion can be used to provide all of the viscosifying characteristics of powdered HEC but in a liquid form.

This product is based on a non-retarded, rapid hydrating grade of HEC, which gives a fast build up of viscosity/yield.

The vegetable oil coating on the HEC particles slightly retards hydration, such that homogenous dispersion is easily achieved in oilfield brines even under very poor mixing conditions. Formation of "fish eye" gels is therefore eliminated.

The inclusion of surfactants in the formulation of BIOVISC 30 also provides a measure of lubrication, thus reducing pipe torque and sticking during drilling operations.

BIOVISC 30 is recommended for use in all aqueous based drilling, completion and workover fluids where HEC is required. The non-toxic and biodegradable nature of BIOVISC 30 makes it especially useful in environmentally sensitive areas or in the drilling of aquifers.

BIOVISC 30 does not contain organoclay and can therefore be used in completion/workover fluids where low permeability formations could be damaged by pore blockage, or in low-pressure water well drilling where skin damage can be caused by clay incorporation.

The viscosity generated by BIOVISC 30 can be broken down using the same products as for drilling grade HEC, i.e. calcium hypochlorite, acid or enzymes.

ADVANTAGES

The main advantage of using BIOVISC 30 as opposed to powdered HEC, or white oil dispersed HEC can be summarised as follows:

Environmentally safe - completely non-toxic and biodegradable.

Easy incorporation in brines with the crudest of mixing techniques.

Stable and pourable at low temperatures. Very high flash point.

Exhibits lubricating properties. Contains no organoclay.

Can be custom produced, with variation to both activity and dispersed polymer being possible.

The concept of a stable dispersion can be applied to many other cellulosic and synthetic polymers; further details are available on request.

TYPICAL PERFORMANCE IN SEA WATER

Apparent Viscosity - 50 cps @ 7 ppb, 100 cps @ 11 ppb, 200 cps @ 15 ppb

The yield point from rest is approximately 25% higher than these values.
